Back on court for the Camozzi Open, organized in collaboration with Active Sport

The Camozzi Open – Memorial Cav. Attilio Camozzi confirms its position as one of the most important international wheelchair tennis tournaments on the Italian calendar. The Brescia Wheelchair Tennis Futures, scheduled from June 9 to 12, will see champions from 11 different countries compete on the courts of Tennis Forza e Costanza in Brescia (Via Signorini, 10).

Four days dedicated to social inclusion through wheelchair tennis, in memory of Attilio Camozzi, a key figure in the growth and development of Active Sport’s projects.

One of the tournaments that makes Brescia a center of excellence in sport therefore returns, in the name and memory of Cavaliere Attilio Camozzi, but not only: “also to remember Geromino and Ettore,” explained Claudia Camozzi, speaking on behalf of the entire family during the press conference held at the AC Hotel, in the presence of city, provincial and regional authorities.

Heading the men’s entry list is a true legend, Martin Legner, the Austrian player who was once world number 3 and has won ten Grand Slam titles (2 in singles and 8 in doubles). Despite being 60 years old, he still ranks among the top 30 players in the world. Legner will, however, face another wheelchair tennis legend: Polish player Tadeusz Kruszelnicki, 66, who has won more than 100 international titles during his career.
Attention will also be on the Italian players, aiming to match the achievement of Fabian Mazzei, the only Italian to have won the Camozzi Open. Among those to watch are Antonio Cippo, Giovanni Zeni, Luca Spano, and Edgar Scalvini from Brescia, an Active Sport athlete steadily rising in the national rankings.
In the women’s draw, the top seed will be 19-year-old British player Abbie Breakwell, currently world number 33. However, the public’s attention will also focus on Marianna Lauro from Sardinia, a former long-time Italian number one, and Silvia Morotti from Bergamo—both previous winners at Forza e Costanza 1911.
Among the quad players (athletes with impairments affecting also the upper limbs), the favorites are two Active Sport athletes from Brescia, Alberto Saja and Ivano Boriva, who recently won the Commit Open in Padua as a doubles team last week.

As tradition for the tournament directed by Maurizio Antonini, there will also be several side events: the Friday evening gala for athletes, staff, sponsors and friends of the tournament, as well as a special match scheduled for Saturday at 4:00 pm. On the central court of Tennis Forza e Costanza 1911, a mixed doubles match will take place featuring both able-bodied and disabled athletes. The match will also include Andrea Caracciolo, the tournament’s testimonial and the player who holds the record for the most goals scored in the history of Brescia Calcio.

It is a real pleasure for me to be the testimonial of this event. As an athlete, I know that achieving a goal requires sacrifice, passion and determination, and these players are a great example of that. I hope that, after two difficult years, the return of this international tournament to Brescia will attract a large audience to support these athletes and highlight the importance of social inclusion in sport.
